Morris Hospital Ranked Among Safest in the Country

November 19, 2018, MORRIS, IL – Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers is one of 43 Illinois hospitals ranked among the safest in the nation after earning an “A” on the Leapfrog Group’s Fall 2018 Hospital Safety Grade.

Developed under the guidance of an expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single letter grade that represents a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. Leapfrog Group issues the report twice annually.

Of the 110 Illinois hospitals that were assessed, 43 received an A, 31 received a B, 31 received a C, 3 received a D, and two received F’s.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses national performance measures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey and Health Information Technology Supplement. The data used to calculate the Fall 2018 Hospital Safety Grade covers a time period ranging from October 2015-2018, depending on the measure.

“Patient safety is absolutely a top priority for our organization,” says Mark Steadham, President & CEO of Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers. “Every day, our staff is focused on reducing infection rates, having checks in place to prevent mistakes, and ensuring we have strong lines of communication between staff, patients and families. We encourage our staff to report safety issues so we can fix processes and procedures before they reach a patient. This is how we protect patients from errors, injuries, accidents and infections.”

The methodology used to calculate the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade has been peer reviewed and published in the Journal of Patient Safety. The Safety Grade is becoming the gold standard measure of patient safety as cited in MSNBC, The New York Times, and AARP The Magazine.
