The Morris Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation program is here to help individuals with heart disease recover faster and return to full and productive lives following a cardiac event, diagnosis or procedure. The program is held in the Morris Hospital rehabilitation gym at the Morris Hospital YMCA under the supervision of one of Morris Hospital’s providers and a team of qualified registered nurses and techs.
Individuals who have experienced a heart attack, open heart surgery, angioplasty or stents, or received a diagnosis of heart failure, angina or other heart condition may benefit from participating in cardiac rehabilitation, which can help:
- lower the chances of a second heart attack or heart surgery
- reduce the overall risk of dying or having a future cardiac event
- lessen chest pain and in some cases, the need for medications
- improve risk factors such as high blood pressure and cholesterol
- achieve weight loss
- improve strength and stamina
- lessen the physical and emotional effects of heart disease

What Can I Expect During Cardiac Rehabilitation?
The Morris Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation program was developed in accordance with the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) and includes three distinct phases, with Phase I taking place during hospitalization following a cardiac event.
Phase II is a medically supervised, 6-12 week outpatient program that meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at the Morris Hospital YMCA. The program includes a personal exercise plan, nutrition counseling, stress reduction, smoking cessation advice and support, and education on medication and diagnosis. During class, participants are closely monitored by certified staff.
Phase III is a maintenance program for individuals who choose to continue participating in a structured exercise program after the completion of Phase II cardiac rehabilitation. As an alternate option to Phase III, patients who complete Phase II cardiac rehabilitation are encouraged to transition to an exercise program at their local YMCA or a private gym. As a result of the partnership between Morris Hospital and the Morris Hospital YMCA, all Morris Hospital cardiac rehab patients are eligible for a free, 30-day membership to the Morris Hospital YMCA when they complete Phase II cardiac rehabilitation.
