Morris Hospital Diabetes Education Center Achieves Re-Accreditation
December 18, 2017, MORRIS, IL – The Diabetes Education Center at Morris Hospital has renewed its status as an accredited diabetes education program through the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE).
According to the AADE, programs that meet their extensive criteria and rigorous standards are considered high quality and have been shown to improve the health status of individuals.
“The AADE accreditation is significant because it verifies that we are using an approved diabetes curriculum that meets a high standard of care,” says Diane Mangan, registered nurse and certified diabetes educator at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers.
Through the Diabetes Education Center, Morris Hospital offers one-on-one counseling sessions for individuals with pre-diabetes, gestational diabetes, type 1and type 2 diabetes. The counseling sessions require a physician’s order and focus on education related to medication administration, blood glucose monitoring, insulin pump therapy and all other diabetes-related care. The Morris Hospital Diabetes Education program first became accredited in 2013, with accreditation renewable every four years.
“Diabetes education is a collaborative process that provides people with or at risk for diabetes the knowledge and skills needed to modify behavior and successfully self-manage the disease and its related conditions,” says Mangan, adding that patients in the Morris Hospital diabetes education program average a 1.6% decrease in their average blood sugar (A1C) over a 120 day period, a significant improvement. “Our ultimate goal is to prevent complications that commonly occur with diabetes and help patients achieve optimal health so they can have the best quality of life possible.”
In addition to one-on-one counseling services, Morris Hospital offers free diabetes education programs for the community including a carbohydrate counting class and a prediabetes class. For more information, call 815-705-7367.
