Free Prostate Screenings in October

September 6, 2018, MORRIS, IL – September is national Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and in its monthly patient newsletter, the Radiation Therapy Center of Morris Hospital says there is no better time for men to talk with their health care providers about this disease so they can make informed decisions about maintaining their prostate health.

Although prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men, when detected early it boasts some of the highest survival rates. While 1 in 6 men will get prostate cancer during his lifetime, only 1 in 34 will die from prostate cancer. When detected during the earliest stages, the 5-year survival rate for prostate cancer is close to 100%.

As an accredited cancer program through the Commission on Cancer of the College of American Surgeons, Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers is committed to offering early detection prostate screenings annually free of charge. This year’s prostate screenings will be offered on three dates in October at Advanced Urology Associates, 1401 Lakewood Drive, Unit 3, Morris. The free screening will include a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a digital rectal exam performed by a urologist.

The screening dates are Tuesday, October 2, from 8-9 a.m. with Dr. Luke Cho; Wednesday, October 3 from 1-2 p.m. with Dr. Gregory Lewis, and Friday, October 5 from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. with Dr. Peter Tek.

The screening is intended for men ages 50 to 70 who do not have prostate cancer and are free of symptoms. Men at high risk for prostate cancer, including African American men and men who have a close relative diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 65, should speak with their physician about beginning testing at an earlier age.

Limited appointments are available. Advance registration is required by calling Morris Hospital at (815) 416-6089.
