Applications Available for Hugo Avalos Scholarship

July 29, 2010, MORRIS, IL – The Morris Hospital Foundation invites students who are currently enrolled or accepted into an accredited medical school, nurse practitioner school, or physician's assistant school in Illinois to apply for its new Hugo Avalos Endowed Scholarship.

Scholarships shall be awarded in amounts up to $5,000 per year on the basis of academic performance, individual character, and overall merit, with preference given to candidates with military, Peace Corps, or other related experience. Special consideration will be given to students who have resided or currently reside in the Morris Hospital service area.

The scholarship was created as a tribute to the late Dr. Hugo Avalos, a physician who practiced in the Morris and Seneca areas for more than 40 years. When Dr. Avalos passed away in 2006, his friends, family, and colleagues wanted to memorialize him by establishing a scholarship fund in his name.

The initial $25,000 contribution for the fund came from Grundy Bank, where Dr. Avalos served as a board member for many years. Additional funding came from family, friends, and community members, including numerous physicians on the Morris Hospital medical staff. A second donation from Grundy Bank brought the fund to the $100,000 endowed level in January 2010.

The Morris Hospital Foundation will use the interest earned on the fund to award the annual scholarship, leaving the principal intact so funds will always be available.

Hugo Avalos Endowed Scholarship applications are available at www.morrishospital.org/foundation, or by contacting Julie Wilkinson at 815-942-2932, extension 7021. Completed applications should be received in the Morris Hospital Foundation Office by August 27. Winners will be announced by October 1, 2010.

The Morris Hospital Foundation was created in 1994 to enhance the work of Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers. The Foundation provides donors the opportunity to make gifts that impact the community's immediate and future healthcare needs.
