Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers Names New Chief Executive Officer

July 27, 2010, MORRIS, IL – The Board of Directors at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers has selected Mark B. Steadham as the organization's next President and Chief Executive Officer. He will assume the top leadership position on September 1.

Steadham is currently Vice President of Operations at Murray Calloway County Hospital, a 132-bed community hospital located in western Kentucky. He has served in this position for four years. Under Steadham's leadership, Murray Calloway County Hospital received the 2009 Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals Performance Improvement Leaders award and the 2010 Health Grades Patient Safety Excellence award.

He previously spent 16 years at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas, where he was Senior Vice President for 10 years before being promoted to President & CEO.

Some of his most significant accomplishments in these positions include reducing staff turnover, planning and implementing a master facility plan, improving employee, patient and physician satisfaction, establishing a foundation, and overseeing numerous building projects.

In between his employment at St. Catherine and Murray Calloway County, he was a self employed consultant and served as interim CEO at three hospitals that were facing various challenges.

The son of a hospital administrator, Steadham's first job was in the housekeeping department at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Langedale, Alabama, at the age of 15. As a student, he held various other positions in hospital radiology, maintenance and admission departments, until he eventually became a Vice President at St. Joseph Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas. Steadham says each of these positions taught him an appreciation for the complexity of hospitals and the people who work there.

"Mark's background in healthcare is long and diverse, and his management style is consistent with the culture of our hospital" says Leon Residori, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers. "He brings experience and enthusiasm which will help guide and direct Morris Hospital's future. The Search Committee and Board feel very fortunate to have found such a qualified candidate. We look forward to welcoming Mark to his new position."

The Board of Directors at Morris Hospital formally began searching for a new President and CEO in February, following the resignation of Bill Bruce in November 2009. The Board appointed a search committee to oversee the process, with representatives from the hospital board, medical staff, and community.

After narrowing the search, the committee invited three finalists to each spend two days at the hospital meeting with physicians, managers, and community members who serve on the Hospital, Auxiliary, and Foundation boards of directors. All employees had the opportunity to meet the finalists and ask questions in "town hall" style sessions.

"I already knew before I arrived for my first interview that Morris Hospital has top-notch patient satisfaction scores and some of the best quality of care measures in the area, along with a solid financial background," says Steadham. "The moment I set foot on the campus, I could tell this is a hospital with people who genuinely care about making great first impressions. I was most impressed with the friendliness of the people, from the employee in outpatient registration who told me Morris Hospital is a great place to work, to the volunteer in the gift shop who explained that Morris Hospital is her second home."

"Morris Hospital clearly has a solid foundation to build on. I'm excited to be a member of the team as we prepare for the future."

A native of Kansas, Steadham has a Bachelor's degree in Health Care Administration and a Master's degree in Business Administration, both from Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas.

He is a member of the American College of Health Care Executives and Calloway County Rotary Club and currently serves on the Finney County United Way board of directors.

He has three daughters and two granddaughters and enjoys outdoor activities, including camping and sailing.

Thomas Meyer, Chief Financial Officer at Morris Hospital, will continue serving as Acting CEO until September 1.

Serving patients in 18 communities, Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers includes the 86-bed Morris Hospital, as well as physician offices in Braidwood, Channahon, Dwight, Gardner, Marseilles, Morris and Newark.
