July 14, 2010, Morris, Illinois – Cheryl Spear, of Coal City, was named Fire Starter of the Month for July at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers. She is a unit clerk in the Family Birthing Suites and an assistant in the Staffing office and is known for always having a smile on her face, being positive, easy going, accommodating, and professional.
As a unit clerk, Spear is stationed at the main hub in the Family Birthing Suites. Along with providing reception to patients, family members, visitors, and staff who come through the Birthing Suites secure doors, she helps keep the unit running smoothly by providing assistance to physicians and nurses. One of her favorite duties is playing the lullaby overhead when a new baby is born.
"It's especially fun watching the families come to see the babies…especially first time families," says Spear. "It's neat to see the love they have for the baby."
Theresa Whillock, Manager of the Family Birthing Suites, agrees that Spear is a perfect fit for the unit clerk role.
"Cheryl's customer service skills are excellent," says Whillock. "She is very accommodating and always tries to please people and make things right."
Spear also makes an impact in the Staffing office, where she interacts with a number of employees and departments.
"When we recently needed extra help, Cheryl stepped right up. She is a quick learner and always willing to learn new things and help wherever she is needed," says Carol Havel, Vice President of Patient Care Services.
Spear came to Morris Hospital four years ago. She was working in the obstetrics department at another hospital at the time and jumped at the opportunity when she saw the opening at Morris Hospital.
"It was one of the best things that happened to me," says Spear. "This is my hospital of choice. It's where I want to be."
Spear says working in two departments at Morris Hospital really gives her the best of both worlds. She says she learned a long time ago when she was self employed that a business or organization is only as good as its employees, and that's what inspires her to give her best to Morris Hospital every day.
"I want Morris Hospital to be here for a long time," she says. "I plan to work here until I retire, and then I plan to volunteer. I already have the surgery waiting room picked out. I can serve coffee and chat with the best of them."
As Fire Starter of the Month, Spear received a Grundy County Chamber of Commerce gift certificate, a special "Fire Starter" lapel pin, and a designated parking spot for the month. Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers is the largest employer in Grundy County with over 940 employees.
