Quality Initiatives

In March 2007, Morris Hospital was named one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Solucient. 100 Top Hospitals award winners are noted for producing solid patient outcomes, having good patient safety, and providing efficient care at a reasonable cost as compared to other hospitals across the nation.

Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers participates in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP). Through this initiative, Morris Hospital has incorporated a number of specific interventions that improve surgical care, such as appropriate use and timing of prophylactic antibiotics and prophylactic medications to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis post-operatively.

Presently, Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers is voluntarily participating in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s (IHI) 5 Million Lives campaign, a national effort intended to help hospitals achieve the best possible outcomes for all patients while implementing interventions targeted to reduce infection, readmissions and mortality rates. 5 Million Lives is endorsed by the American Hospital Association, American Nurses Association, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and Joint Commission.

Hospitals that choose to participate in 5 Million Lives were asked to adopt one or more of the campaign’s 12 patient safety interventions. Morris Hospital elected to focus on seven of the 12 and has teams in place to lead each of the interventions, which include:

  • Reduction of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus infection (MRSA)
  • Delivering reliable, evidence-based care for congestive heart failure (CHF) patients
  • Delivering reliable, evidence-based care for patients experiencing acute myocardial infarction, or heart attack.
  • Development of a Rapid Response Team that provides a prompt response and assessment at the first sign of a change in a patient condition.
  • Reduction of surgical site infections
  • Reduction of surgical complications
  • Reduction of ventilator associated pneumonia

While many of IHI’s recommendations for quality patient care have been in place at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers for some time, participation in 5 Million Lives provides an opportunity to build upon the success that have already been achieved in quality of care through previous initiatives such as the national Quality Forum’s 30 Safe Practices for better health care.  It also gives Morris Hospital access to more patient safety resources that assist in continual improvement in quality of care. Ultimately, participation in initiatives such as 5 Million Lives and SCIP makes a safe hospital like Morris Hospital even safer.
