Critical Care Frequently Asked Questions

Critical Care Frequently Asked Questions

The following are freqently asked questions that family members have when a loved one is in Critical Care:

What About Personal Belongings?

We ask that you take home the patient's valuables. The patient may need a robe, non-skid-soled slippers, toothbrush, comb and brush.

What Can I Bring the Critical Care Patient?

Cards and flowers are always welcome; however, we ask that visitors refrain from giving balloons to patients. More than likely your loved one may have an altered diet with some restrictions, so please do not bring candy or food.

How Can I Help the Critical Care Patient I'm Visiting?

There are a number of things you can do to show your concern.

  • Let the patient know you're there. Even if he/she is not alert, a familiar voice can be comforting.
  • Don't be afraid to touch the patient. A reassuring touch may be the best way you can help your loved one.
  • Be positive and supportive.
  • Be a good listener.

How Do I Communicate with the Critical Care Team?

  • Introduce yourself to the nursing staff. Make sure the Critical Care Team knows how to contact you when you are not at the hospital.
  • Select a family spokesperson who can speak for all of you and who can share new information with the rest of the family.  Ideally, this person is the Power of Attorney for Healthcare or appointed Surragate.
  • Make a list of questions before meeting with the doctor.
  • Provide as much information as you can about the patient.
  • Share wishes of the patient regarding surgery, life-support, dialysis and other difficult decisions with the Critical Care Team.

Is There a Place I Can Go for Quiet?

There is a meditation room located off the second floor lobby. It is available at all times for silent reflection, meditation and prayer.

Where Can I Wait?

Family members may wait in the second floor family lounge outside of the CCU. The CCU staff always checks there first if they need you. You may bring food into the family lounge. While cell phone use is not permitted in the critical care area as it may interfere with specialized equipment, there is a telephone in the family lounge for your use. You can even have friends and family members call you on this phone. The number is 815-942-2932, ext. 7410. Please remember, no smoking is allowed on the Morris Hospital campus.  We recommend that you alternate your time at the hospital with other relatives so that you get the rest you need.

Are Social Services Available?

Yes, if you have need for these services, please ask the nurse to contact this department for you.

If you have questions, please call the CCU at (815) 942-2857.
